iEARN Suriname projecten

Sedert haar start in 1998 heeft iEARN Suriname tal van nationale en international projecten uitgevoerd. Hier is een greep van de projecten die in de loop der jaren is uitgevoerd.


1998
A delegation represented iEARN Suriname at their first iEARN International Conference, held in Tennessee, U.S.A. in July 1998. By attending this conference iEARN Suriname became an official member of the iEARN community and as such started to recruit participants, teachers and students, from other schools in Suriname.

In December 1998 the first project of iEARN Suriname was launched called “CAKI - Campaign for Kids”. The purpose of the project was to try and meet the needs of children from a relatively poor environment, by organizing fundraising activities.


1999

During the first quarter of 1999 students initiated "Exchanging Cultures Makes Friends". This project was presented at the 6th Annual iEARN Conference in July 1999 in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The iEARN Suriname delegation presented this project during the "YOUTH DAY" at the conference in Puerto Rico, covering our various cultures as a peaceful co-existence in Suriname.


KVCO- Video Project
At this conference an international project named "Kids Video Collaboration Online" was launched with ten participating countries including Suriname. This environmental project covered the following topics:

• Nature preservation - Showcases on National Parks;
• Pollution and;
• Waste Management.

Students and their teachers / coordinators in the participating countries, collaborated through e-mail and the Internet, exchanging information on the above mentioned topics, using video footage to enhance their stories. The video footage was then sent to the international coordinator of the KVCO project, Schools Online, an international organization whose motto is: "Connecting schools together, one computer, one school at a time". There the footage of all the participating member countries was edited into one presentation videotape of iEARN International and KVCO Project called: "Get on the Net, And there we Are".


Tonka Island Promotional Video

iEARN Suriname students worked on "Nature Preservation: Showcases on National Parks," visiting the Brownsberg Nature Park and Tonka Island situated at the foot of the Brownsberg in the van Blommenstein reservoir (lake) both part of the Brokopondo district. A result of the visits to Tonka Island was  the making of a promotional video, in order to help the Panda Foundation, managing the island in its strive to make Tonka Island an education center for students in the Brokopondo area as well as from the coastal region, exchanging information and learning from each other’s culture and customs.


Math On-line
Math On-line is a project where school classes in different countries exchange information and experiences on the use of mathematics in the real day-to-day world via e-mail and the Internet. This project is an on-going project in which students of iEARN Suriname also have participated and contributed.

2000
iEARN Suriname started working on three main objectives:
•    The structuring and legalization of iEARN Suriname into a legal entity.
•    Promoting iEARN and its ideas and values to teachers, students and others.
•    Preparations for participation in the 7th International iEARN Conference 2000 in Beijing, China.


Planet Project
From 15-18 November 2000 iEARN Suriname participated with students in the Planet Project, the largest poll ever held worldwide organized by the International organization called Against All Odds Productions. The technology, needed for this major event, was provided by 3COM. Two Suriname teams won technical grants along with 48 other top-pollsters around the world (including 21 iEARN members).


2001
Priceless Medicines in Our Backyard
During the 7th iEARN Conference in Beijing, China in July 2000 the representatives of the countries who participated in the KVCO project, decided on initiative of the Suriname delegation to start working on a new project called  "Priceless Medicines in Our Backyard". Teachers and students from eight countries representing most continents proposed an international Internet-based collaboration project to raise awareness about medical plants hiding in forests and other habitats around the planet. At the 8th iEARN Conference in Cape Town, South Africa in this year, representatives of the participating countries presented their reports during a special workshop.
This project was completed in April 2002 and resulted in a presentation video and in a few more weeks a website.

Since January 2001 iEARN Suriname has made a number of presentations at several schools, and in April 2001 conducted two 2-day teachers’ workshops resulting in 7 official member schools and growing. iEARN Suriname will focus on integrating iEARN curriculum based projects into the Suriname education system.


Tap' Sey Mit' Foto Sey (South meets North)
This project included an interactive collaboration between students and teachers from the coastal area (Paramaribo) and from the interior (Brokopondo) of Suriname. Students, under guidance of their teachers, discussed environmental issues such as the ecological footprint that was left after a dam was build, and acres of virgin forest as well as more than 30 villages were lost in the reservoir. The students discussed the past, present and the future of the islands in the reservoir. Students and their teachers met for four days at the beautiful Tonka island situated at the Van Blommenstein reservoir. It is our intention to turn this project into an on-going activity.
Most projects in Suriname are currently being conducted as after-school (non-formal) activities, nevertheless this form of education has contributed to the enhancement of the students’ and teachers’ educational skills and has proven to be successful.

Projects and Trainings in Suriname

KaKi – Kampagne voor Kinderen in Dec. 1998

• The iEARN teachers and students organized a special fundraising campaign during the holy season of 1998 for the children of  the Children’s home ……….that has been devastated by a raging fire.

KVCO - Kids Video Collaboration Online ,1999/2000

• The E-mail/ video project “ Kids Video Collaboration Online has been prepared and designed by  Schools Online a non profit organization in the U.S.A. for students to discuss and do research  regarding the environmental aspects in their country regarding nature conservation and pollution.
• The following countries took part in this project: Suriname, Mexico, Uganda, Latvia, Macedonia, India and South Africa.
• A video film presentation of 12 minutes was the end result of the joint effort of all the participating schools/ students in their respective countries.

Learning Circle - Math in our Lives ,1999

• A typical project to be used in class for the math lessons and is adapted to be applied to the every day live occurrences.
  
  

Planet Project, Nov. 2000

• This project has been initiated by the U.S.A. organization “ Against All Odds Productions” together with the computer giant 3COM..
• During 4 days planet pollsters made a survey starting at the same time in 158 countries across the globe with their Palm PC in their hands.
• The objective was to find out by having these polls how people are experiencing life in the year 2000.
• iEARN- Suriname did perform very well during the entire survey and did receive two technical grants.
  
  

Medicines in Our Backyard ,2001/2002

• At the KVCO meeting in Beijing it was proposed by the delegate from India to continue with a similar kind of project with the herbal plants as the subject.
• They did question the meeting if anybody did know of the Niem plant and were surprised to learn that this plant was well known in Suriname, due to the fact that 150 years ago the contract laborers from India did bring the plant with them to Suriname.
• At that point in time it was decided to continue with the international iEARN project Medicines in Our Backyard, coordinated by iEARN-Suriname with India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Macedonia, Slovenia and Ukraine as participants.

Training : Introduction to iEARN & project-based learning, April 2001

• 50 Teachers of secondary schools were trained in the project based learning programs and they did make their first acquaintance with the iEARN Network

2EDUCATE, August 2001

• A project where students from the elementary schools in Paramaribo (about 1700 students) got the opportunity to get acquainted with the basic principals of the computer and use iEARN projects as a tool for a educative use of the internet and computer programs.
• This project enabled teachers to support NV SITT in training 1700 pupils the basic skills to operate the computer.
  
  

Training : Introduction to iEARN for the 2 educate project (teacher training), august 2001

• A two day training’s workshop for teachers from the elementary schools who were willing to work as volunteers during the execution of the 2educate project.
• In cooperation with the local computer firm NV. Sitt a training program has been executed during the summer holidays where 35 elementary school teachers were trained in project based learning programs.

Tap’ Sey Mit’ Foto Sey, September 2001

• A four days exchange program with students from Brokopondo(Tap’Sey) in the interior and from Paramaribo(Foto Sey) took place on the Tonka island which is located in the middle of the van Blommenstein-lake, a water storage reservoir for the hydro- power dam at Afobaka.
• The discussions were about the ecological footprints left behind since the construction of the dam  and with that the come into being of the van Blommenstein –lake 40 years ago..
• Their introduction to iEARN and getting acquainted with the iEARN Network.

In deze periode zijn de activiteiten vooral gericht op het introduceren van nationale en internationale iEARN projecten b uiten het formele schoolprogramma om (niet formeel)


CaKi – Campagne voor Kinderen(dec. 1998)
De kersverse student-leden van iEARN Suriname particip[eren in fondswervings activiteiten voor het kopen van kerstcadeaus’s voor weeskinderen.


KVCO - Kids Video Collaboration Online (1999/2000)
Videoproject: Kids Video Collaboration Online. Schoolsonline - Amerikaanse NGO. Deelnemende landen: Suriname, Mexico, Uganda, Latvia, Macedonia, India, Zuid Afrika. Door middel van e-mail en video werd gediscussieerd over de volgende milieuaspecten: - natuurbehoud, natuurvervuiling, omgaan met vervuiling. Het resultaat: een 12 minuten durende videopresetantie gemaakt door de studenten zelf. Opmerking: Deze video wordt thans door vele lidlanden gebruikt bij  evenementen om iEARN te introduceren.


Learning Circle - Math in our Lives (1999)
Een project waarbij gekeken wordt naar de toepassing van wiskunde in het dagelijks leven.

Planet Project (nov. 2000)
Een project geiniteerd door de Amerikaanse NGO Against All Odds Produtions en computergigant 3COM. In 158 landen trokken planet pollsters met Palm PC in de hand gedurende 4 dagen door het land om via enquetes antwoord te krijgen op de vraag: Hoe leeft de mens anno 2000 op deze aarde? Suriname kwam in aanmerking voor 2 technical grants vanwege de topprestaties die werden geleverd.


Medicines in Our Backyard (2001/2002)
Toen bij de KVCO meeting tijdens de iEARN Conferentie in Beijing het voorstel kwam voor een vervolg, stelde iemand uit India een medicinale plantenproject voor. Vooruitlopend vroeg hij aan de deelnemers wie de niemplant kende en was verbaasd dat Suriname dat bevestigde. Zo werd uitgelegd hoe de plant in Suriname werd geintroduceerd. Aan het Miob project doen  deelnemende landen: Suriname, India, Nepal, Macedonia, Slovenia, Sri Lanka en Ukraine.

Training introduction to iEARN & project-based learning (april 2001)
50 leraren van de middelbare school werden getrained in project-based learning en maakten kennis met het iEARN netwerk.


2EDUCATE (augustus 2001)
Een vakantie trainingsproject van nv Sitt tezamen met iEARN Suriname waarbij 35 GLO leerkrachten werden getrained in project-based learning en een introductie in iEARN, die de nv Sitt hebben ondersteund bij het trainen van meer dan 1500 pupillen van de lagere school in het gebruik van computers.


Tap’ Sey Mit’ Foto Sey (september 2001)
Een uitwisselingsproject van studenten uit Brokopondo (tap sey) en uit Paramaribo (foto sey). Op Tonka-eiland gelegen in het van Blommenstein stuwmeer werd gedurende 4 dagen gediscussieerd over de ecologische voetstappen die werden achtergelaten sinds het ontstaan van het stuwmeer.


Projecten in 2002 – 2004:
In 2002 is gestart met de introductie van nationale iEARN projecten, met een eigen Surinaamse identiteit, passend in het formele school-programma. Met het internationale volks costuum project (iEARN project Folk Costumes Around the World) als uitgangspunt hebben op enkele scholen de leerkracht met zijn leerlingen een eigen invulling aan het project gegeven.


Folk Costumes Around the World (start november 2002)

School: AMS / Vak: gehele school

Tijdens de week van 25 november hebben vele studenten in klederdracht de school bezocht. Uit een selectie van foto’s hebben studenten diverse klederdrachten beschreven. Publicatie van een internationaal iEARN Suriname document (november 2002)
In navolging van de conferentie in Moskou alsook de nationale iEARN activiteiten werd er een internationaal document gepubliceerd en gepresenteerd aan de totale iEARN community getiteld:

Organizing iEARN in your country / the iEARN Suriname experience. Dit document handelt over de wijze waarop iEARN Suriname is opgericht, gestructureerd en functioneert.

Tori Happening in Fort Zeelandia (november 2002)

School: A. A. Hoogendoorn Atheneum – 2e klas / vak: Nederlands

Leerlingen hebben op 30 november een “torie=-happening” in Fort Zeelandia georganiseerd. Middels toneelstukken zijn de hindoestaanse en de creoolse cultuur op eigen creatieve wijze gepresenteerd.


Traditionele kleding van verschillende culturen in Suriname (februari 2003)

School: Mgr. Wulfingschool – 2e en 3e klas / vak: Engels

Leerlingen verzamelen informatie over de klederdracht van verschillende bevolkingsgroepen. De resultaten worden verwerkt in een engels verslag. Hiernaast heeft iedere groep de klederdracht op eigen creatieve manier gepresenteerd. Op 14 februari zijn de werkstukken aan de school gepresenteerd.


Bijzondere vrouwen – Celebrating our women (maart 2003)

School: St. Louise School 3e klas/ vak: aardrijkskunde

Groepjes leerlingen beschrijven een vrouw die voor hen als voorbeeld dient. Deze persoon is geïnterviewd en de gegevens zijn door de leerlingen in een kort verhaal verwerkt. Deze bijzondere vrouwen zijn tijdens een tentoonstelling van de verhalen door de school uitgenodigd en gehuldigd.


Verschillende culturen: hun geschiedenis, kleding en muziek (april 2003)

School: Shri Hanumanschool – 3e klas / vak : geschiedenis

Werkstukken zijn gemaakt over de geschiedenis van verschillende culturen; hoe zij hier kwamen, hun kleding en muziek uit land van herkomst. De resultaten zijn klassikaal gepresenteerd waarbij de groep de klas in de sfeer van die cultuur heeft gebracht door traditionele kleding, de muziek en voeding. Op 5 juni tijdens de viering van 130 jaar Hindoestanen immigratie is een presentatie voor de school verzorgd.
IEARN Online training, October 2001 and march 2002

• A two month online training conducted by iEARN International
• Completing this course will give the title of “iEARN master Teacher”
• Teacher have the opportunity to learn how they can integrate a iEARN project into their classroom and curriculum.
• The teachers who participate get the chance to experience a alternative learning method called “ Project based learning “
  
  

Presentaties van iEARN Suriname (nov. en dec. 2003)
Verschillende presentaties over iEARN op de volgende scholen:

• Louiseschool
• Wulfingschool

En een teach in bij de St Clemens Parochie. Deze presentaties en teach in zijn bedoeld als voorloper voor verdere trainingen en workshops van iEARN en nauwere samenwerkingen met de verschillende scholen en parochie.

iEARN Online trainingen (2004 t/m 2009) iEARN Suriname participeert actief aan de facilitering van de 2 jaarlijkse iEARN internationale online trainingen door het ter beschikking stellen van een online facilitators. Deze online trainingen zijn bestemd voor leraren uit de hele wereld en leert hen hoe iEARN projecten uit te voeren, maakt ze bekend met het gebruik van ICT in het onderwijs en leert hen om te gaan met de methode van project gebaseerd onderwijs. Voor Suriname zijn Elizabeth Burgos (Creative Arts) en Dave Abeleven (Science, Math and the Enironment) de online facilitators.


Samenwerking iEARN en Global Teenager Project (GTP) Suriname (feb. 2004, en vanaf 2008)

In februari 2004 gaan iEARN Suriname en GTP Suriname een samenwerking aan door ondertekening van een MoU. Deze twee organisaties committeren zich om gezamenlijk te werken aan de kwalitatieve verbetering van het Surinaams onderwijs door middel van trainingen ten behoeve van leraren en de uitvoering van projecten gericht op joongeren.


Global Teenager Project Leer Cirkel (maart 2004 t/m mei 2004)
iEARN Suriname en GTP Suriname participeren met leerlingen en leraren van scholen in de omgeving Latour samen met scholen in Coronie en Moengo aan de Internationale Global Teenager Project Learning circle. Bij dit project moeten leerlingen doormiddel van het beantwoorden van vragen omtrent allerhande belangrijke onderwerpen (voor jongeren) op onderzoek uitgaan en de resultaten uitwisselen in groepsverband (circle) met medestudenten in andere landen onder begeleiding van hun leraren.


Art Miles Mural Project (2005)

Studenten van de AMS hebben in 2005 een MURAL ontworpen en beschilderd. Deze MUIRAL is tesamen met andere MURALS van studenten uit andere landen aaneengehecht om zo de langste MURAL van de wereld te creeeren. Het thema was Multi Cultural Diversity. Kinderen hebben samengewerkt  om de MURAL te kunnen creeren. Deze activiteit heeft veel media aandacht gehad.


Flowers-a smile of divine love (2005)

In dit project hebben kinderen van verschillende lagere scholen vele gedichten, gezegden en beschrijvingen van bloemen verzameld. Ze waren zo in staat te ontdekken waarvoor de bloemen gebruikt worden en hebben zelf ook gedichten geschreven over de bloemen. Enkele van de bloemen zijn toen verstuurd naar het buitenland.

Appreciation of our Culture & Traditions
Dit project werd internationaal gefaciliteerd door Suriname en startte in 2004 als deel van de bijdrage aan het Internationaal Jaar van de afschaffing van de slavernij 2004. Studenten hebben onderzoek verricht naar de geschiedenis van mensen die naar hun land kwamen, de impact op de bevolking heden ten dage en de bijdrage die ze hebben geleverd. Door dit onderzoek hebben ze zelf hu eigen persoonlijke relaties met andere delen in de wereld kunnen ontdekken en zo een gevoel van global citizenship kunnen ervaren.
